Who Do You Think You Are?

On my way home from dropping Julie off at preschool, I heard the following quote on my favorite Christian radio station:

You are not what you think you are. You are not even what others think you are. You are what you think others think you are.

Hmmm...interesting. The implication is that we define ourselves by our understanding of others' perceptions of us. The speaker went on to explain that this is why children have such a hard time with teasing or other unkind comments. I suppose it gives some good insight into self-esteem issues, but I can't help but think something is missing. I was expecting to hear something along the lines of "You are what God thinks you are...what He knows you are...what He made you to be." After all, he is the only objective one among us, the only one whose view is based on factual knowledge and not just opinion...the one who designed and created us specifically with a purpose in mind. Whether we seek to hear his defining voice is another matter entirely, and it is admittedly not always easy. Hence, my ongoing struggle to write the "about me" blurb for this blog. How exactly do I define myself in a few sentences? Who am I really? Maybe I'll be inspired now that I'm making progress on fixing up the rest of the blog. We'll see!
