Cosley Zoo Classes

Julie and I went to two classes at Cosley Zoo recently. They were both wonderful! The first one was all about animal food. After talking about what animals eat, the kids got to go around to different stations and look at a picture of an animal wile reaching into a bag to discover a sample of its food. After that, the kids got to meet a real live animal! The teacher held out a handful of fresh fruits and veggies and asked the kids what kind of animal might eat this food. As the kids were guessing, Julie reached out and ate a piece of the food! I have no idea what she ate, but at least it was real people-food too! The food turned out to be for a turtle, which we got to pet and observe. After meeting the turtle, the kids made a bird feeder craft, which you can see below. When spring comes, we will hang Julie's feeder outside our window and see what birdies come to visit us! After the craft, the kids participated in a flannel board reading of the Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Finally, they got to feed the ducks a handful of food. I really need to bring my camera with us next time.

At our second Cosley class, the topic was animal eyes. The stations each had a picture of an animal covered by a flap, all except its eye. It was fun to lift the flap to see each animal. Then we got to meet an animal with pink eyes...a bunny! Julie was very gentle in petting Sophie the bunny. The craft was decorating a mask. Julie chose to make an owl mask, as you can see below. After story reading, the kids got to meet a big snake in a tank! Julie was fascinated by him. We really like Cosley Zoo time!
